Perry is a musician, teacher and composer originally from the Washington DC area. They grew up with music loving parents who exposed them to a wide variety of genres including Motown, Musical Theater, Classic R&B and Rock. When they started playing guitar around age 13, Perry widened these influences to Jazz, Metal, Rap and various genres of music from around the world. They continue to be equally as inspired by Wes Montgomery as they are by Kirk Hammet, João Gilberto, and Joni Mitchell. Perry draws on these diverse influences and their eclectic musical experiences in everything they do.
In High School, Perry joined the D.C. based Trad Jazz group Capital Focus Jazz Band. They recorded and gigged with the band for 2 years, including a trip to Spain to perform a series of concerts with the Sant Andreu Jazz Band, the youngest working Jazz group in Europe. During this time Perry also played in their High School Jazz Big Band and Combo, winning numerous awards for Jazz performance at various regional and national festivals. Perry also began composing around this time, and for their composition “Anne” took 1st place in the SAIC Digital Arts Competition.
Perry completed a B.A. at Columbia College Chicago and was awarded numerous scholarships. While they majored in composition, they also performed regularly in various groups including the Big Band, Combo, Fusion, New Music, Free Jazz and Laptop Ensembles. These groups regularly performed at some of the mainstays of Chicago Venues, including The Chicago Theater, The Field Museum, The Jazz Showcase, The Chicago Cultural Center, Buddy Guy's Legends and more. While performing with the Columbia Fusion Ensemble, Perry won the best soloist award at the Notre Dame Jazz Festival. The group also won an outstanding performance award from Downbeat Magazine for their 4 song EP. Perry got the opportunity to compose and perform their own music for all of the ensembles mentioned, as well as several others including Debussy Trio, Chamber Orchestra, Sax and Piano Duo and more. Their Piece for Solo Melodica “Home Again” won second place in the Allen Turner Composition Competition.
Outside of Columbia Perry regularly performed their own work and others. Their experimental punk rock band/performance art group Fatkid recorded 6 albums and produced a live concert video and a spoof documentary which they edited. Perry recorded two albums with their Jazz group Dod Kalm and performed with the Improvisatory Hip Hop group Metatron Collective. Perry also held a Solo Guitar Residency at the Westin River North in Chicago.
After graduating Perry quickly rediscovered their love of theater and performing in Pit Orchestras. Since 2016, they have performed in close to 40 musicals including several award winning productions. Among these include Kokandy Productions Jeff-nominated Bonnie and Clyde, several Theo Ubique shows including Jeff-nominated Hedwig and the Angry Inch, as well as the Jeff Best Musical award winners The Bridges of Madison County and Boho Theater’s Big Fish. Perry also recently did two seasons at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, performing in the musicals Once on this Island and RENT, Understudying Revenge Song, and recording guitar and teaching/arranging guitar parts for Romeo and Juliet.
